Théâtre Antique d’Orange
U kunt hier een wonderbaarlijke reis terug in de tijd maken om de historische hoogtepunten van dit uitzonderlijke monument te beleven. Het Romeinse theater van Orange werd gebouwd ten tijde van keizer Augustus en is een van de best bewaard gebleven Romeinse theaters in het westen. Het staat op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO.

Het theater is in buitengewoon goede staat bewaard dankzij de scènemuur. De noordgevel (37 m hoog bij 107 m lang) werd door de Zonnekoning als de mooiste muur van zijn koninkrijk beschouwd. Met ingang van de 19e eeuw werd het gebruikt als decor voor de grootste theatervoorstellingen. Het is ontworpen voor het Gallo-Romeinse publiek. Ook werd vanaf deze plek de Romeinse cultuur en taal verspreid. 9000 toeschouwers konden de treurspellen, komedies, maar ook voorstellingen met dans, acrobatiek en jongleren bijwonen. Pas in de 19e eeuw werd het theater opnieuw gebruikt als schouwburg.Tegenwoordig worden er Romeinse schouwspelen georganiseerd en wordt er het wereldberoemde operafestival ‘Chorégies d'Orange’ gehouden.
Sinds 2018: Een rondleiding gevolgd door een 3D-film. Met behulp van een virtual reality bril gaat u terug in de tijd naar de 1e eeuw voor Christus. U bent bij de bouw van het theater in de tijd dat de stad Arausio werd opgericht.
Bezichtiging met audiogidsen in 10 verschillende talen en een film in het Frans en Engels over de geschiedenis van het monument vanaf het Romeinse rijk.
Als afsluiting van uw bezoek kunt u naar een virtuele voorstelling "Les Fantômes du Théâtre’’ (De Spoken van het Theater) die zowel spannend, verrassend, droomachtig, nostalgisch als geestverruimend is.

Find great products and a menu which changes with the seasons! There is a private terrace as well as a room at the back which you can hire out. Suggestion: go for the tuna tataki, it's excellent!

In the morning, when the theatre is still closed to the public, you can get a magnificent bird's eye view of the site and the city as a whole. Go to the very end of the park to access this view and what's more, it's free!
